Amy Schumer put the comedy aside recently to speak out about something close to her heart. The issue of gun control laws in the U.S.
Joined by her cousin Senator Chuck Schumer, Amy gave an emotional speech outlining the need to implement tighter gun control laws following a speight of mass shootings around the U.S.A. The recent shooting that took place in Lafayette, Louisiana on July 23rd, occurred at a movie theatre during a showing of Amy’s latest film, ‘Trainwreck’ so it became extremely personal for her.
At a press conference in New York Amy showed her support for Senator Schumer’s call for change including a national background check system and increased funding to mental health services.
Senator Schumer said, “We’re here to say enough is enough. We can’t just sit back and allow mass shootings to become commonplace. How many breaking news flashes will it take for Congress to act?”
Despite receiving backlash from some of the public after speaking out about these important gun control issues, Amy remains adamant about advocating for change. “I want to be proud of the way I’m living and what I stand for. These are my first public comments on the issue of gun violence, but I promise you they will not be my last,” said Ms Schumer as she held back tears.
I think most of us would agree, something needs to change and change soon!
